VR Department Critter
What is the VR Department?
The new Eurofurence VR Department was first established for EF28 to bundle cross-domain expertise in extended reality (AR/MR/VR) and emerging technologies in a dedicated team. The importance of virtual reality in furry fandom has now become so significant that calls from the community for its integration into the convention have grown louder and louder.
We are a diverse team of VR natives, IT technicians, programmers, game designers, artists, event technicians and many more.
Example Critter Tasks
- Setup and teardown tasks related to VR Department A/V tech - aka helping us move stuff from A to B and installing equipment
- Monitoring motion capture and streaming systems as well as support of performers during stage events.
VR Department: VR Dancers
VR Dancers
This group for pre-selected on-site VR Dancers of the VR Department. Critters of this type may sign up for dance shifts at the Arena Stage.
Who, what?
people who are interested in performing at EF on site as VR dancers during some selected DJ sets. The corresponding live performance to the music will then be projected onto the stage screens by the VJs. A preliminary interview and assessment (or word-of-mouth recommendation) are required, as well as a mandatory setup appointment on site.
Procedure outline
-
There will be a separate VR setup at the Eurofurence dance stage this year.
-
Registered performers can sign up for the corresponding slots to have their dance performance projected. The available slots will be announced as soon as the schedules are finalized.
-
The duration of the performances is flexible (30 minutes - up to a whole set depending on availability) - it is important to come to coordinate with the other performers. We will make sure that the changeover time is not too long. All registered dancers are allowed to participate. The goal is to make the most of the schedule.
-
It is also possible to pause during a performance - screening is not always continuous, depending on the artistic choices and stage directions at the FoH.
-
Dancers are always supervised by an operator who takes care of the streaming setup and hardware and communicates with the dancer.
Our Setup
-
A separate area with a SteamVR setup will be provided. There will be four base stations, a Valve Index HMD with a PU leather gasket + Knuckles via a cable pulley and up to ten trackers (3x HTC Vive 3.0, 7x Tundra Labs). Corresponding hygiene management is also available.
-
We have to evaluate the tracking quality on site - the minimum setup is head/hands/hip/feet.
-
We only provide basic tracker straps. If you have your own and want to bring and use them, that is ideal. The same applies if you want to use your own Valve Index gasket.
-
We can only integrate your own hardware to a limited extent and by arrangement (eventually Quest Pro, etc.). Personal computers cannot be used/interfaced.
-
The choice of avatars is free as long as they are SFW or nothing else speaks against them (use common sense). Note: “green” avatars should not be a problem, since we don't use a “green screen” but extract transparency directly from the game.
-
All performers should log in to the corresponding computer in VRChat on a setup day beforehand so that a quick-launch profile can be created before the performance. If you do not want to do this, you should create a secondary or dummy account in advance and upload the corresponding avatars there (if the avatars to be used are not public). Account changes have so far contributed to long changeover times, which we want to correct as practiced at other cons.
-
The sound of the dance hall will be audible in the performer's area, there will also be a speaker (monitor wedge) at the edge of the dance floor to hear the sound without latency. A video livestream of the action on the dance floor will be played in VR via a desktop window (with slight latency). We are currently evaluating whether you can invite a limited number of friends to the instance (who will not be screened) and watch/listen to a re-stream to dance together.
